Signs of a Cockroaches Infestation in Your Fort Lauderdale Home

At Mega Bee Rescues & Pest Control, we’ve seen it all when it comes to pests in South Florida. One of the most common—and concerning—household pests we deal with is cockroaches. These resilient critters are not only unsightly, but they can also carry harmful bacteria and trigger allergies. Whether you’re in Fort Lauderdale or North Miami Beach, a cockroach infestation is something you’ll want to address ASAP. But how can you tell if you have an issue?

In this post, we’ll walk you through the telltale signs that cockroaches may be invading your home, so you can act fast and get the cockroach control you need!

1. Unpleasant Odors

Cockroaches leave behind a musty, oily smell that becomes more noticeable as the infestation grows. If you’ve recently noticed an odd smell in your home, particularly in dark, damp areas like basements, bathrooms, or under sinks, it could be a sign of cockroach activity.

2. Cockroach Droppings

Roach droppings are small, dark specks that can be mistaken for ground coffee or pepper. These droppings are commonly found near baseboards, under appliances, or in the corners of your kitchen and bathroom. Seeing these tiny, dark pellets around your home is a clear signal you need to take cockroach control seriously.

3. Egg Casings (Oothecae)

Cockroaches reproduce quickly, and one of the easiest ways to spot an infestation is by finding their egg casings. These brown, oval-shaped casings, known as oothecae, can be found in hidden areas like under cabinets, behind furniture, or in cracks and crevices. Each casing can hold up to 50 eggs, so spotting even one can mean there are many more cockroaches lurking nearby.

4. Shed Skin

As cockroaches grow, they shed their skin multiple times throughout their life cycle. If you find small, papery skins in areas where you suspect cockroach activity, it’s a strong indicator of an active infestation. Look in hidden places like behind large appliances, under sinks, or in your kitchen pantry.

5. Seeing Live Cockroaches

If you see a live cockroach in your home, especially during the day, it’s likely you’re dealing with an infestation. Cockroaches are nocturnal creatures, so spotting them in daylight usually means their population has grown large enough to push some out of their typical hiding spots.

6. Dead Cockroaches

Dead cockroaches in your home are a common sign of an infestation. Even if you’re only finding a few here and there, it means cockroaches have made themselves at home in your space. Keep in mind, they may have died from old age, but the rest of the colony is likely alive and well.

7. Smear Marks

In areas with a lot of moisture, cockroaches tend to leave behind smear marks as they travel. These dark streaks can be found along baseboards, on walls, or around kitchen appliances. If you notice these strange marks, it’s a good time to call a professional for cockroach control.

8. Damage to Food Packaging

Cockroaches are always on the hunt for food. If you notice tiny bite marks on food packaging or unexplained holes in bags and boxes in your pantry, it could be the work of cockroaches. They can chew through cardboard and thin plastic, so any damage in your food storage is a red flag.

Why Cockroach Control Matters

A cockroach infestation is not just an inconvenience—it’s a health risk. Cockroaches can contaminate your food, surfaces, and air with bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, as well as aggravate asthma and allergies. When you spot the signs of cockroaches in your Fort Lauderdale home, it’s crucial to act quickly before the problem worsens.
