Here at Mega Bee Pest Control in North Miami Beach, we hear this question almost every week. The short answer is no, asian subterranean termites are not taking over Miami, but they are becoming more common and more noticeable. The most important things homeowners should know early on are that these termites spread quickly, thrive in South Florida’s climate, and can cause serious damage if left untreated. Professional termite control and early detection are what make the biggest difference.
What Asian Subterranean Termites Are
Asian subterranean termites are an invasive species that live underground and build mud tubes to reach wood. Unlike drywood termites that stay inside furniture or framing, these termites attack from below and can remain hidden for long periods of time. Their colonies grow large and fast, which makes their presence feel almost ubiquitous known once they become established in an area.
How did Asian Subterranean Termites get to South Florida?
Asian subterranean termites arrived in South Florida through human activity, not natural migration. Their spread is closely tied to global trade and the movement of materials into the region.
They are believed to have entered South Florida through ports, likely hidden in infested cargo such as wooden pallets, crates, or shipping materials. South Florida has major shipping hubs and receives a high volume of international goods, which makes it especially vulnerable to invasive pests arriving this way.
Once introduced, the environment did the rest. South Florida’s warm temperatures, high humidity, and sandy soil closely resemble the termite’s native habitat in parts of Southeast Asia. That allowed small, unnoticed colonies to survive, establish themselves, and expand.
Another factor is how easily these termites spread locally. Asian subterranean termites can form very large colonies and are capable of producing multiple queens. This allows them to grow faster and spread farther than many native termite species once they gain a foothold.
Why North Miami Beach Is Ideal for Them
South Florida offers exactly what asian subterranean termites need to survive. Warm temperatures, high humidity, and frequent rain allow them to stay active all year. Many homes in North Miami Beach also have slab foundations, coastal moisture exposure, or minor drainage issues, all of which make it easier for termites to move from soil into structures.
A Personal Experience From the Job
I remember inspecting a home near Collins Avenue where the owner was convinced they had a simple ant problem. During the inspection, I found mud tubes hidden behind a utility panel that led straight into the wall framing. The termites had been active for months without any obvious signs. Because we caught it early, the homeowner avoided major repairs, and that moment really reinforced how important regular inspections are in this area.
Are They Really Taking Over Miami?
Asian subterranean termites are spreading, but taking over is an exaggeration. What is happening is that more homeowners are noticing swarms, discarded wings, and subtle damage because colonies are closer to populated neighborhoods. When people delay treatment, the damage escalates quickly. When they act early, the problem is very manageable.
